Giorgios IV.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giorgios IV. (* 1106 ; † 1158 ) was a Nubian king who ruled Makuria from 1130 to 1158 .

Giorgios is best known for his round marble tombstone , which was found in a monastery in Wadi en-Natrun in Egypt . The stone is described in Greek (on the edge) and Old Nubian (in the center). The language suggests that Giorgios was king of Makuria, although this cannot be decided with absolute certainty.

It remains a mystery to this day how this inscription got to Egypt. The ruler is not known from any other sources.
