Giorgos Leotsakos

Giorgos Leotsakos ( Greek Γιώργος Λεωτσάκος , in Latin texts also George , born August 9, 1935 in Athens ) is a Greek musicologist and critic who is one of the most important researchers in the field of art music of modern Greece.

Life

Leotsakos studied with Kostas Kydoniatis and Yannis Papaioannou at the Odeion in Athens (Ελληνικό Ωδείον), where he obtained a diploma in counterpoint and fugue composition in 1964. After completing his studies, he began to write early as a critic and writer for the leading Greek daily newspapers, since 1970 he has been the editor of articles on the music of Greece and Albania for the New Grove Dictionary as well as for the "Biographical World Lexicon" (Παγκόσμιο Βιογραφικό Λεξικό).

In addition to numerous monographs, including for the Ionian University in Corfu , Leotsakos has also participated in the publication of records on Greek music (especially for the Greek label Lyra ) and written numerous concert programs. Since 1981 he has also been one of the few Eastern European musicologists to study the music of Albania . In addition, he has translated numerous music-historical works, as well as the Vita Benvenuto Cellini, into Greek.
