Giovanna Dandolo

Giovanna Dandolo was a Dogaressa of Venice through marriage to the Doge Pasquale Malipiero , who ruled from 1457 to 1462 .

Giovanna Dandolo supported the newly introduced art of book printing in Venice and the needlepoint industry of Burano . She was the financier of many writers. Many of the early books printed in Venice are dedicated to her. She has been called the "Empress of the printing press" and "Queen of the needlepoints".

The only surviving portrait of a Dogaressa from the 15th century is that of Giovanna Dandolo, which is on the reverse of a medal made by Pietro da Fano.
