Giovanni Arnolfini
Giovanni Arnolfini (* around 1400 in Lucca ; † September 11, 1472 in Bruges ) was an Italian merchant from Lucca in Tuscany . He moved to Bruges with his family at an early age, where he traded in silk and other goods. The French form of the name Hernoult-le-Fin also seems to have been in use for his time in Flanders .
He was probably portrayed twice by Jan van Eyck . On the one hand there is the Arnolfini wedding , the marriage with Giovanna Cenami , on the other hand it is a portrait from later years.

Remarks
- ↑ However, the painting was created as early as 1434, while Arnolfini's wedding to Giovanna Cenami did not take place until 1447, six years after van Eyck's death. If the picture actually shows the wedding of one Arnolfini, then that of another. For hypotheses on this cf. Margaret L. Koster: The Arnolfini double portrait: a simple solution
