Giovanni Battista Abatessa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni Battista Abatessa (also known as Badessa and Giovanni Battista Bitontino; other spellings Abbatessa and Abadessa as well as Giovanni Batista and the French form Jean Baptist Abbatezza; * before 1627 in Bitonto ; † after 1652) was an Italian composer and guitarist.

Life

Not much is known about Giovanni Battista Abatessa's life. His place of birth Bitonto in Apulia is given in the tablature books after his name. He is referred to there as Bitontino. He had contacts in the cultural centers of northern Italy, where he published his tablature books, such as B. Magni and Zanobi Pignoni in Florence, Giovanni Robletto in Orvieto and Lodovico Monza in Milan.

Works

Four books on tablature are known by Giovanni Battista Abatessa. They are collections of pieces that were written in the chitarra alla spagnola for the five-sided or five-course baroque guitar , which was customary at the time . They are accompaniments to popular songs and dances from the early seventeenth century, such as PassacagliaCiaccona , Folia , Ruggiero and Aria di Fiorenza (composed by Emilio de 'Cavalieri as part of the Florentine Intermedia of 1589 ) and others. a. The volume Cespuglio di varii fiori also includes five Villanelles for one, two or three voices with guitar and basso continuo. Each of the books includes instructions on how to play the tablature and tuning the guitar. The number of editions that were mostly identical in content and that followed in a short period of time indicate a certain popularity in its time.
