Giovanni Cavaccio (* 1556 in Bergamo ; † August 11, 1626 ibid) was an Italian composer , conductor and poet.

Live and act

Giovanni Cavaccio is said to have been a singer in the Munich court orchestra in his youth. He then probably stayed in Venice and Rome before returning to Bergamo as a singer in 1576. From 1581 to 1598 he worked as a teacher at Bergamo Cathedral . After a public contest with Orazio Scaletta (1550-1630) he was appointed Kapellmeister in June 1598, a position he held until his death in 1626. At Santa Maria Maggiore he led the chapel to growing importance, so numerous well-known works by other composers were acquired during his service, including the Vespers of Mary by Claudio Monteverdi . He also enjoyed quite a reputation as a poet. Because of its importance, he was accepted into the "Accademia degli Elevati" in Florence.

His published compositional work, which largely belongs to the Stile antico , includes 15 books with masses, the Magnificat, psalms, hymns and motets as well as some secular works. In addition, he created several collections of polyphonic instrumental works. The church music is mostly set in the style of the Venetian polychoir .
