Girard II (Roussillon)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Girard II ( German  Gerhard ; † 1172 ) was a count of Rosselló ( Roussillon ).

He was the only son of Count Gausfred III. and his wife Ermengarde "Trencavella". For several years the father had pursued the annulment of his marriage and the favoring of a son from a concubinage as an inheritance, which the papal side always refused to do. After the death of the father Girard II received from Pope Alexander III. confirmed its legitimacy in two letters dated August 19, 1165.

In his will, written on his deathbed on July 4, 1172, Girard designated the Count of Barcelona and King of Aragon , Alfonso II , as his heir.
