Gausfred III. (Roussillon)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gausfred III. († 1164 ) was a count of Rosselló ( Roussillon ). He was a son of Count Girard I and his wife Agnes.

In 1110 Gausfred married Ermengarde "Trencavella", the daughter of Vice Count Bernard Aton IV of Béziers-Carcassonne from the House of Trencavel . After his father's murder in 1113, Gausfred was able to succeed him as count.

In addition to his marriage, Gausfred had a concubinage with a woman whose name was not known. For several years he tried with the Popes Eugene III. , Hadrian IV. And Alexander III. about the annulment of his marriage and the legitimation of his children from the cohabitation. All Popes rejected this request, referring to the legality of his marriage to Trencavella and thus the legitimacy of their son Girard II. On February 24, 1164 Gausfred wrote his will.
