history

Kurhaus Gyrenbad around 1880

The heights of the Töss Valley were economically developed in the 13th century by the Lords of Landenberg . In the area of today's Girenbad the arable farm Hof Rüti was first mentioned in 1364 (referred to as Sennhof in older sources). In the 15th century a bathing business was started there, which appeared in 1464 in the Zurich Steuerrodel as a Gyrenbad. In the 16th century, the bath became known as a sanatorium and social place for civil society in the city of Zurich (first bathing regulations from 1602).

In 1620 today's main house was built as a half-timbered building. The newly founded Zurich Medical Association "Zum Schwarzen Garten" devoted a detailed description of the Gyrenbad in their 1826 New Year's paper. At that time the bath offered accommodation to 90 guests. In the bath house there were 35 wooden bathtubs as a cleaning bath with water and whey cures. In 1823 today's west wing was added and in 1843, instead of the bathhouse, today's east wing (dining room building) was added.

While the bathing business came to an end in 1968, the Gyrenbad's economy remained a popular excursion destination in the Tösstal region. In 1975 the building ensemble of the Gyrenbad Inn was included in the inventory of protected objects of supra-communal importance with the new Zurich building law. Since 1990 the Gyrenbad has been renovated and modernized in stages according to the principles of monument preservation.
