Giri (underwater mountain)

In Dhivehi , the language of the Maldives , a giri is the name for an underwater mountain that, unlike a thila, reaches to the surface of the water and can protrude from the water at low tide .

Giri's stand, as well thilas within Kandus where they receive flow of nutrient-rich water. On the sometimes steep sides there are overhangs and caves that small fish use as hiding places and which are hunted by larger fish.

The flat relief and lower currents a Giri for is novice diver and underwater - Macro -Photographen most suitable.
