In Dhivehi , the language of the Maldives , a kandu is the name for the channels between the islands, reefs and atolls .

description

In a kandu there is usually a strong current due to the tides , as it enables water to be exchanged with the interior of an atoll. This current carries the plankton formed in the atoll into the open sea and attracts large fish such as schools of mackerel , eagle rays , manta rays and various types of shark , including whale sharks .
