Yolande Mabika

Yolande Bukasa Mabika (born September 8, 1987 in Bukavu ) is a participant of the 2016 Summer Olympics in the Democratic Republic of the Congo . She started as a judoka in the group women up to 70 kg for the Refugee Olympic Team and lives in her host country Brazil .

Life

Separated from her parents at a very young age during the Second Congo War, Mabika only remembers being alone and then being taken to the capital Kinshasa by helicopter . There she lived in a center for displaced children and learned the sport of judo.

She traveled to Rio de Janeiro for the Judo World Championships in 2013 , where she and her teammate Popole Misenga were able to flee the hotel after two days from the atrocities of their trainers, who locked them up without food or water . With the help of the aid organization Caritas , she was able to apply for political asylum. Like Popole Misenga, she got a place in the Refugee Olympic Team . Today Mabika trains with Geraldo Bernardes at the Instituto Reação in Rio de Janeiro, which was founded by Flávio Canto .
