In Dhivehi , the language of the Maldives , a thila is the name for a small, rounded underwater mountain in an atoll that does not reach the surface of the water. Most of the time, the top of the reef lies at a depth of 5 to 15 meters and is exposed to strong currents.

description

Nutrient -rich fresh water flows against thilas that are inside Kandu . Many reef fish and corals live on the reef top of the Thilas ; on the partly steep sides there are overhangs and caves that small fish use as hiding places and which are hunted by larger fish. So there are big snapper -Schwärme and sea fans -, stone and soft Koralleen -Gardens.

Diving

A thila in a kandu is inhabited by diverse life due to the abundance of food transported by the strong current and is often visited by large pelagic fish and is usually a good dive site .

Thilas located within an atoll, on the other hand, are much quieter with only low currents. Here nudibranchs , frogfish , other small marine life as well as hard corals can be found during dives .
