Guitarrón

The guitarrón ( Spanish: large guitar) is a Mexican bass instrument from the guitar family . It usually has six strings (ADGCEA, the low A-string sounds an octave lower than the A-string on a normal guitar), but there are also four- and five-string versions. The very large resonance body , which is bulging on the back, is striking . The guitarrón usually has no frets . It is mostly played standing up and especially in the Mexican mariachi bands . It is also common in other Latin American countries.

The Chilean guitarrón has 25 or more strings.
