etymology

The word tab is linguistically related to lax and has Middle High German the meaning cloth or rag . What is meant is something hanging limply.

application

A classic example is the flap on an envelope , with which the envelope is closed. Since the flap is made of paper , it is called a paper flap . Tabs are also used on beverage cans and food cans made of aluminum or tinplate , so the so-called tear - open tabs are used to open the metal containers.

In steel construction , the bracket refers to a flat piece of material, usually with mounting holes, with which two components, e.g. B. steel girders can be connected by means of screws and nuts or rivets . Due to the increased use of welding, this connection method has lost a lot of its importance. In timber construction , too , tab joints with wooden tabs and pin-shaped connecting means are common.

In shoes , the tab (tongue) is a tongue-shaped to rectangular part in the middle of the upper leather, over which the laces are pulled together. This tongue seals the shoe when it is closed and increases comfort when worn.

Furthermore, the rails of the railway are connected by brackets. In Germany, this process has been replaced by thermite welding and is only used in exceptional cases (construction sites, broken rails, etc.) on the rail joints.
