Giulio Castagnoli

Giulio Castagnoli (born November 22, 1958 in Rome ) is an Italian composer .

Life

Born in Rome into a family of physicists, Castagnoli completed his studies in musicology at the University of Turin in 1983, where he had also attended courses in classical philology and archeology in previous years. A year earlier he graduated with a major in piano and composition. From 1983 to 1986 he attended the Freiburg University of Music . There he received a diploma in composition from Brian Ferneyhough . In 1987 he received a diploma in Franco Donatoni's master class at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Since 1984 Castagnoli has been Professor of Composition at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory, Turin, and since 1999 Professor at the university there.

He gained his first practical experience in children's music theater with micro-operas with texts by children between three and ten. In 1984 he met John Cage and in 1986 Giacinto Scelsi . In the same year he wrote the essay Suono e processo nei 4 pezzi 1959 di Giacinto Scelsi . He also dedicated “Klang” to him, his first work for string orchestra. In 1996 he worked with the writer Dario Voltolini on two radio plays for RAI-Radiotre.

Well-known composition commissions were in 1989 Sei Haiku for the Elision Ensemble, Melbourne, Canti per Orchestra for the Stamford Chamber Orchestra (CON.), On the occasion of the anniversary of the discovery of America the commission of TM Plus Paris for Cloches en Noir et Blanc 1991 and 1993 Command de l'Etat for Quattro Pometti per violoncello for the French government.

  • "Oscar Back Prize" in Amsterdam, in the same city in the same year award from the Gaudeamus Foundation

  • Special award from the Prix Italia jury for Al Museo, Radio Opera 1991
  • Special award from the Prix Italia jury for his radio play about the war in the Balkans, also in 1991
