Council for International Organizations of Medical Science

The Council for International Organizations of Medical Science ( English Council for International Organization of Medical Sciences , CIOMS ) is an international, non-governmental and non-profit organization in 1949 by the World Health Organization and the Organization of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to Life was called.

Through its members, CIOMS is an integral part of the scientific biomedical community. In 2003 CIOMS had 48 international members, mostly represented by national academies and councils from medical research .

Main objectives

  • Facilitating and promoting international activities in the field of biomedical science
  • Maintaining relations with the United Nations and its specialized agencies ( mainly WHO and UNESCO )
  • General services for the benefit of the scientific interests of the biomedical community

The bioethical guidelines of CIOMS can be found in the book International Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical Research Involving Human Subjects .

Development of drugs and their benefits and risks

On this point, the CIOMS has created various working groups that deal with the issues of assessing and monitoring drug side effects. The following was developed by the working groups:

  • CIOMS I for adverse drug reactions and SUSAR
  • CIOMS II for summary reports over a specific period
  • CIOMS III guidelines for key points of clinical research (investigator brochure, etc.)
  • CIOMS IV guideline for benefit-risk analysis for approved drugs and detection of signals
  • CIOMS V changes in pharmacovigilance , pragmatic approaches (e.g. standardized MedDRA queries)
  • CIOMS VI clinical trial management
  • CIOMS VII Development of a collective report for clinical research
  • CIOMS VIII Early Detection in Pharmacovigilance
