Giulio Gianini
Giulio Gianini (born February 9, 1927 in Rome ; † May 16, 2009 there ) was an Italian film director and cameraman.
Life
Gianini studied stage design at the Art Academy in Rome. After completing his studies, he first turned to photography and drew cartoons for newspapers. Gianini came to film in the 1950s and worked as a cameraman on various feature and documentary films, including Café chantant by Camillo Mastrocinque in 1953 and Pirate of the Seven Seas in 1962, directed by Rudolph Maté and Primo Zeglio . From 1957 Gianini worked with Emanuele Luzzati on several short animated films. Luzzati received an Oscar nomination in 1966 for her short animation film La gazza ladra, based on a composition by Rossini ; Gianini and Luzzatti were both nominated for an Oscar in 1974 to produce Pulcinella .
In collaboration with children's book author Leo Lionni , five animated films based on the author's works were made in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1978, Gianini was the founder of the animation department of the Centro Sperimentale du Cinematographia in Rome, where he taught until 1999. Gianini died in 2009 after a long illness in Rome, the city of his birth.
