Giuseppe Cambiano

Giuseppe Cambiano (born May 18, 1941 in Turin ) is an Italian historian of ancient philosophy .

Life

After studying philosophy in 1965, Cambiano acquired the laurea from Nicola Abbagnano at the University of Turin . From 1968 to 1975 he was assistant at the chair for the history of the philosophy of antiquity, which Pietro Chiodi initially held, and from 1972 to 1977 he was professore incaricato for the history of philosophy. From 1975 to 1977 he was professore straordinario there for the history of ancient philosophy. From 1977 to 2002 he was professore straordinario and then ordinario for the history of philosophy. From 2003 he was professor ordinario for the history of ancient philosophy. In 2004 he moved to the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa in the same position . In 2011 he was retired there.

Cambiano performed various functions in the course of his career. From 1979 to 1985 he was director of the Istituto di Filosofia, later the Dipartimento di Filosofia of the University of Turin, from 2000 to 2003 he was president of the Corso di laurea specialistica in Filosofia e storia delle idee and from 2002 to 2003 deputy director of the Facoltà di Lettere e filosofia of the University of Turin. From 1998 to 2000 he was President of the Consulta Nazionale Universitaria di Filosofia and for six years a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the International Plato Society. From 2007 to 2009 he took over the management of the Centro di Studi sulla Fortuna dell'Antico in Sestri Levante, founded by the late Emanuele Narducci .

Awards

Since 1990 he has been a corresponding member of the Accademia delle Scienze di Torino, and since 1997 he has been a corresponding member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei .

Research areas

Cambiano works on four themes. First, the history of ancient philosophy, especially Plato and Aristotle , second, the history of the sciences in antiquity, especially geometry , mechanics and medicine , third, the history of the history of philosophy and that of the natural sciences since antiquity, fourth, the afterlife of antiquity , with particular attention to the representations of the polis in European culture from 1400 to 1800.
