Miller's coat of arms and greeting at the Furkertmühle in Klipphausen-Miltitz

Glück zu (also: Glückzu , as an exclamation: "Glück zu!" ) Is the traditional greeting of the millers . It was also adopted by molinologists and mill builders , the latter also using the greeting "Rad Glück!" As an alternative .

Meaning background

The greeting goes back to the wanderings of the traditional miller craftsmen, when the budding journeymen were supposed to carry their luck from mill to mill. Arriving at a new mill, the wandering apprentices greeted the resident master miller or his highest journeyman with the traditional words “Glück zu!” And asked for work.

The full greeting “Glück zu! A hiker speaks about work and greetings from the last master and journeyman! ”The name of the master and the mill of origin were then added.

The congratulations (in the original sense of the word) are intended to protect Müller and Mühle from storms, bad harvests, fires and other damage and accidents that were common in the milling industry and that could easily ruin a milling operation.

Congratulations also in the sense of "good luck on all roads!" - that is, on the (unsafe) wandering, but also a happy hand in dealing with the mill technology.

The greeting was also used to say goodbye, especially when the miller's boy continued his journey and moved on to the next mill.
