The Glacier Reinsurance AG (also abbreviated "Glacier Re") is a Swiss reinsurance company based in Pfäffikon in the community Freienbach in canton Schwyz . The company was founded in 2004 by Robert Klaus and started operations on January 1st, 2005. Robert Klaus previously worked for 18 years at Frankona Rück and its successor company GE Frankona, which was taken over by Swiss Re in 2006 .
The foundation of Glacier Re was supported by the US venture capital fund "HBK Investments LP", by "Soros Fund Management LLC" (behind this name is the US investment banker George Soros ) and by the reinsurance broker "Benfield Investment Holdings Ltd". HBK holds the majority in Glacier Re. Intermediate is a holding company " Glacier Re Holdings s.à rl " with headquarters in Luxembourg .
Glacier Re mainly insures aerospace and offshore energy risks. The company employs 90 people and posted gross written premium income of $ 569.3 million in 2008.
The company entered the industrial insurance market in Germany through a newly founded, wholly-owned subsidiary, Glacier Insurance , headquartered in Liechtenstein . Business operations in the Cologne office began on October 1, 2007. There are further branches in London and Zurich .
In July 2010 the risks from the primary insurance business were transferred to Torus Insurance , the employees and the office in Cologne were also transferred to Torus.
The reinsurance company is in liquidation, i. In other words, no more new risks are written and the existing risks are gradually regulated and, if possible, so-called run-off profits are realized.
