The glossy pheasants ( Lophophorus ) or Monals represent a genus of pheasant-like . They were first described by Coenraad Jacob Temminck in 1813 . Their habitat are the rhododendron forests in the high altitudes of the Himalayas and Sichuan .

features

The males all have brightly colored, iridescent plumage. Your physique is rather plump. Their diet consists of plants such as roots and bulbs and insects. In mating behavior one speaks of the so-called obligatory polygyny . That is, the male mates with several females, whereby the females barn at each other and in turn only mate with the selected male and enter into a monogamous relationship. Due to habitat destruction and hunting, they have become quite rare and their population is endangered.

The glossy Himalayan pheasant has been bred regularly in Europe since the middle of the 19th century. The eggs are usually incubated either in an incubator or by a mother hen. The breeding of the glossy green-tailed pheasant has so far only been successful outside of China at the San Diego Zoo.
