Alloa glassworks tower

The Alloa Glassworks Tower is located on the Alloa Glass Works site in the Scottish town of Alloa in the Clackmannanshire Council Area . It is the only remaining glassworks tower in Scotland. The conical tower is listed as a Scheduled Monument . An inclusion in the Scottish monument lists in the highest category A from 1972 was revoked in 2015.

history

In 1750 the Alloa Glass Works were founded by Lady Frances Erskine. The construction of the first glassworks tower was carried out by dedicated specialists from Bohemia who also instructed the local workers. The tower had a diameter of 15 m and a height of 27 m. As part of an expansion of the complex, three more towers were built between 1825 and 1827, including the one that is preserved today. Most recently, the neighboring south cone was demolished in 1968. The north cone described here was embedded in a shell building at that time, which was removed during the dismantling of the south tower. Today it is the only glassworks tower in Scotland and one of only four surviving in the UK .

description

The brickwork of the approximately 24 m high, open top, frustoconical tower is made of brick . It was erected above a round glass-making furnace. Its task was to create a sufficiently large suction and thus enable high temperatures for production. The tower rests on an octagonal foundation.
