museum

In the spring of 1968, on the initiative of North Bohemian glass refiners who settled in Rheinbach after the Second World War, around 100 people from Rheinbach founded the association “Friends of noble glass”. In the same year, a glass museum was opened in the city's former town hall building. The Hickisch Foundation formed the basis of the museum collection. In 1980 the city of Rheinbach took over the sponsorship of the museum. Between 1985 and 1999 the federal government made several purchases of glass object collections; these collections were given to the museum on permanent loan. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia subsidized the creation of a new museum building: In 1989 the rooms that were integrated into the renovated Himmeroder Hof could be occupied. In the museum workshop there is the opportunity to watch craftsmen making glass.

Himmeroder Hof

The Himmerod Abbey originally managed its properties in and around Rheinbach from the farm . The main part is a half-timbered building from the first half of the 18th century. As a monument zone, the courtyard is now a cultural and civic center. The glass museum is the core of the facility. The museum building is designed for multifunctionality; the largest exhibition room in the house is also used as the council chamber of the city of Rheinbach.

Stocks

The museum's collections include Central European glass products from the Baroque , Biedermeier , Historicism and Art Nouveau periods . The focus is on the production period of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Among other things, baroque cut glasses, colored, cut and cut glasses from the Biedermeier era, friendship mugs, magnificent goblets from historicism, bath and souvenir glasses from the 19th century as well as Art Nouveau, Art Deco and technical school glasses from Steinschönau and Haida are shown in the permanent exhibition . In addition, an overview of the art of Bohemian glass production and processing is given.

The stock of modern studio glass documents trends in contemporary glass production, which deals with the material glass in an experimental and creative way. In the museum you can see both individual pieces of used glass as well as purpose-free modern glass sculptures. One area of the museum is dedicated to the development of Rheinbach glass art. Many of the pieces are based on historical models. Products by instructors from the Rheinbacher Glasfachschule are also shown here, with the design and execution often coming from different artists and craftsmen.
