Glasserton Parish Church

The Glasserton Parish Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland near the Scottish town of Whithorn in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

Cross finds dated to the 10th century indicate an early Christian use of the location of Glasserton Parish Church. The oldest fragments of the current building date from the 17th century. Essentially, however, it is a new building from 1732. In 1836 the bell tower was added and the building expanded, resulting in today's T-shaped floor plan. The roof turret with open bells on the west gable dates from the 17th century. It was moved to this location by the Church of Kirkmaiden in the early 19th century .

description

The church is largely isolated about three kilometers southwest of Whithorn. The masonry consists of quarry stone with natural stone surrounds made of sandstone . The three-story bell tower emerges on the north side. There is the pointed , profiled entrance portal. The tower is designed with lancet windows and ends with battlements. Buttresses on the edges carry square turrets with pinnacles .

Round arched windows are set into the four-axis south facade , with the flanking windows being smaller than the inner ones. A former central round portal has meanwhile been closed with masonry. Elongated windows on the upper floor presumably once served to illuminate the gallery. They have also been locked in the meantime. The east and west gable sides are each designed with two arched windows. The building closes with a slate roof .
