Glen Garioch (pronunciation in Doric : Glen Geery ) is a whiskey distillery in Oldmeldrum , Aberdeenshire , Scotland . The distillery buildings are classified in category B in the Scottish monument lists.

history

The distillery was founded in 1797. It has a long and eventful history with many changes of ownership and closures. Since 1970 it has been owned by Morrison Bowmore and was completely taken over by the Japanese Suntory in 1994 . It was one of the first distilleries in Scotland to switch to natural gas , with the waste heat being fed into tomato greenhouses since 1976. Glen Garioch is one of the few distilleries that still has its own malt floors, but they are no longer used. In 1995 the distillery was closed for some time, was supposed to be sold, but was reopened in 1997. The distillery still has two wash stills, but only one spirit still, the second has not been renewed. The spirit safe you can watch this circumstance - the left side for the second pot still used, is completely covered with patina. The current annual production is 750,000 liters; if production remains the same, the still will probably have to be replaced in 2014 [obsolete] .

Glen Garioch has a visitor center and can be visited.

Bottlings

Glen Garioch is available in different versions: the standard range (Founders Reserve, 12 years) and also some special bottlings (vintage annual bottlings and "Virgin Oak"). It is a non-smoky, more "floral" Highland whiskey.
