Íslandsbanki hf. is an Icelandic bank. From 2006 to 2008 it operated under the name Glitnir banki .

history

The bank was created when the three privately owned banks Alþýðubanki (Union Bank), Verzlunarbanki (Commercial Bank), Iðnaðarbanki (Industrial Bank ) and the state- owned Útvegsbanki (Fisheries Bank ) merged to form Íslandsbanki . At that time it was the only major private bank in Iceland. It has been listed on the Icelandic Stock Exchange since 1993 . In 2000 the FBA (Icelandic Investment Bank) was taken over. In 2004 Íslandsbanki bought the Norwegian bank Kredittbanken . In March 2006 the name of the bank was changed to Glitnir banki . Glitnir is a glorious palace of gods in Norse mythology .

At the end of 2006, Glitnir managed assets of around EUR 25.5 billion and was able to record a profit of around EUR 434 million for the 2006 financial year.

After Glitnir got into financial difficulties in the wake of the financial crisis from 2007 , the Icelandic central bank , on behalf of the Icelandic state, took over 75 percent of the shares at the end of September 2008 for EUR 600 million. In the course of the nationalization, the name of the bank was changed back to the original name Íslandsbanki .

In 2009 the state share was again reduced to 5%.
