Global 2000 (study)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Global 2000 is an environmental study commissioned in 1977 by US President Jimmy Carter as part of a message to Congress . It was published by the US government in 1980 and translated into German in the same year by a group of employees at the publishing house Zweiausendeins . The first German edition comprised 1438 pages. An additional volume with around 200 pages appeared in 1981 under the title “Time to Act”.

It should determine fundamental developments in environmental conditions and their effects on the future of mankind by the year 2000. The study was conducted by the Council on Environmental Quality (engl., Dt. Council for Environmental Quality ) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs created along with other federal agencies and a network of institutions and experts. It was therefore much broader and more progressive than the study Limits to Growth that the Club of Rome had published in 1972. She predicted both disproportionate population growth and growing environmental problems and already saw clear signs of climate change .

The study was sold around 500,000 times in the USA . In Germany it is still considered to be the most successful book by your German publisher, and it met with a broad response, especially in the environmental movement. Since some of its predictions did not materialize, it is now considered outdated. For the history of the development and perception of environmental problems, however, it continues to be one of the most important works.

Since the study was paid for by US taxpayers' money, it can be downloaded free of charge as a PDF document in several languages.

In 1993 the book Global 2000 Revisited: What Shall We Do? released. Some of the authors of Global 2000 summarize their forecasts. Some of their expectations have been exceeded (e.g. freshwater), others have turned out to be less problematic. Furthermore, forecasts up to the year 2200 are made and their problems discussed and shown in graphics.
