Global Ingredient Archival System
The Global Ingredient Archival System ( GInAS ) is a project of the pharmaceutical authorities of Germany ( BfArM ), Canada ( Health Canada ), the Netherlands ( CBG-MEB ), Switzerland ( Swissmedic ) and the United States ( US-FDA ) for comprehensive provision of verified information on all types of substances used or significant in the pharmaceutical field . The system is based on the ISO standard ISO 11238 .
The software for the GInAS is developed by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS).
Goal setting
GInAS is intended to contain identifying and other scientific information on all classes of medicinally used substances. There are five categories of substances as defined in ISO 11238:
- Chemically defined substances
- Proteins
- Nucleic acids
- Polymers
- Structurally diverse substances.
In the future, GInAS should bundle publicly available information and make it freely accessible under a uniform identifier. It should

- Physical Properties
- biological properties
- pharmacological data
- pharmacodynamic data
- Side effects
- Impurities
- Metabolites
are recorded.
In addition, it is planned that GInAS should also serve as an exchange platform between the regulatory authorities and the industry. For this purpose, it is intended that confidential information is made available in a protected area.
The GInAS software is provided as public domain software. There can also be local instances of the system that exchange information with one another. A central node is used to consistently generate the identifiers and distribute free information.
