The Rolandschule is a municipal primary school in Perleberg , Brandenburg. The school building was opened in 1912 and is listed as an architectural monument in the Brandenburg state monument list.

history

Due to the increasing number of pupils around 1900 and the resulting lack of space, the council of the city of Perleberg decided to build a new school on the Beguinenwiese. Despite protests from some residents who feared for their quiet location, construction work began in 1911 and the topping-out ceremony was celebrated on October 19. The official inauguration of the boys' school finally took place on October 17, 1912 as part of a festival program.

In the final phase of the Second World War , the school and an upstream residential building were partially destroyed. The northern half of the school building remained closed until around 1949. Instead of the destroyed house, a barrack was built, which was ready for occupancy on January 17, 1949. A total of 31 classes could now be taught in the 19 classrooms of the main building and the four rooms of the barrack.

In 1950 the village school in Düpow and the auxiliary school were closed and the pupils were assigned to the boys' school, the latter being decoupled again in 1951. The following year, the schoolyard was expanded to include the grass area west of the school. Despite some renovations in the post-war period, there was still damage that the inspectors criticized during on-site visits. Nevertheless, the city of Perleberg refused special allocations when drawing up the budget. The building was further damaged in 1956 by a flood of the Stepenitz and a hurricane with wind force 12.

Through the law passed in 1959 on the socialist development of the school system in the GDR, the school became Polytechnic Oberschule II in the following year and from then on also accepted girls.

In 1964, the city council provided the municipal schools in Heinrich-Heine-Straße with an area of 65,000 m² for school gardening. The plan initiated by the director Werner Fritsche in 1974 to build a school and public observatory was rejected by the city during the planning phase due to excessive costs.

On October 5, 1975, the school was named "Hans Beimler" after a memorial stone for Hans Beimler had been inaugurated in the schoolyard the year before . On September 1, 1988, the Hans Beimler School received its first own canteen.

For the 1991/92 school year, POS II was converted into a six-year elementary school. In addition, after reunification, the school name "Hans Beimler" was dropped and from then on it was simply called the 2nd elementary school Perleberg.

The Stepnitz flood in 1993 flooded the entire cellar and the lower hall of the school building. Many devices, books and furniture were destroyed. The estimated renovation costs amounted to 680,000 DM (about 510,000 euros). In 1994 the barracks, which had previously housed the after-school care center, were torn down and have now been moved to the top floor of the school building.

On June 4, 1998, the school was named "Roland School", based on the Roland figure on the Great Market. For the 2001/02 school year 99 pupils from the 1st elementary school were taken over, the closure of which had been decided in 1996 due to falling pupil numbers.

In 2011 the school's canteen was demolished and rebuilt and the school yard redesigned.
