Perleberger Roland

The Perleberger Roland stands in Perleberg , the district town of the Prignitz district in the state of Brandenburg .

history

In 1498 the Perleberger Roland was first mentioned in council minutes. In these it says: "Item de Rolanth kostede twyntich mark (den meyster tho lone vifteyen mark mede gerekent) with all costs". It is believed that the Roland was made of wood at that time. The year 1546, engraved twice, is the same as the year for the establishment of the district court for the Prignitz in Perleberg and in the same year Johannes Konow, a very committed mayor, was appointed first district judge. It is not known whether this number is synonymous with a renewal of the Roland, which in medieval cities was a symbol of civil liberties and jurisdiction. In order to shape the glamor and character of the city - especially now that the regional court was established here - it would be understandable to improve the Roland and replace the figure that might be made of wood with one made of stone. Today's Roland statue with a curly pompous shield, theMark's eagle , the headgear and the decorated armor was renewed at the end of the 16th or beginning of the 17th century. Likewise, the sword and nose had to be repaired in the 19th century because they had been damaged by vandals. In 1954, due to the increasing traffic on the former F5 , which at that time ran through the city center , the Roland was moved about 1.60 meters in the direction of the town hall.

description

The 5.50 meter high Roland figure made of sandstone is located on the northeast side of the Great Market in front of the former library. It depicts a knight with ornate plate armor, holding a sword up in his right hand and a shield leaning against his left leg with his left hand. The Brandenburg eagle is on the shield . A pillar on the back supports, this bears the year 1546. The Roland statue is on an octagonal base, the sides of which depict scenes from the Hercules saga. This relief is badly weathered and can hardly be seen. In addition, the year 1546 is carved on the front edge of the base. An attempt at reconstruction of the hardly recognizable figures in the relief can be found as a drawing in the local museum.
