Bell ring on the main square

The bell ring on the main square of Linz in Upper Austria is a small memorial that recalls the history of the big bell in the parish church of Linz .

history

Emperor Friedrich III, who moved to Linz in the last years of his life . had a big bell poured for the Gangolf Chapel in Linz Castle . Because it was too heavy for the castle tower, Emperor Maximilian I gave it to the parish church as a gift in 1494. The bell created by the imperial father and given to his imperial successor was named "Empress". It was badly damaged in the city fire in 1509, and the Neuguss shattered ten years later. The bell, newly created by Benedikt Reicher in 1519 , was cast again by Melchior Schorer in 1693 with a weight of 4,760 kg and a diameter of 193 cm. The fourth generation "Empress" was displayed in front of the home of the wealthy Pruner merchant family before she was raised in the tower of the parish church. As a reminder of this event, Mayor Johann Adam Pruner let a ring around the circumference of the bell be embedded in the ground.

The small monument was placed under monument protection in the 2009 Capital of Culture year .

description

The 1.7 cm wide bell ring has an outside diameter of 193.6 cm and is located near the Trinity Column in front of the house at Hauptplatz No. 15.

The year 1693 within the iron ring recalls the presentation of the "Kaiserin" bell cast by Melchior Schorrer, which stood in this place in 1693 before it was brought to the parish church.

The year 1979 was added when the main square was paved in the course of the construction of the pedestrian zone.
