The bell tower, behind it the bell house

The bell tower is a medieval defense tower on the edge of the old town of Eisenach in Thuringia . It is located in the south of Eisenach's old town and, together with the neighboring bell house, forms a monument.

history

From the twelfth century the Eisenach city wall was built and with it the bell tower as a watchtower around the year 1200. In 1585 the bell house was added to the tower and from then on it was used to store the bells of the nearby George Church, which at that time did not yet have its own church tower. In the 18th century the tower was rebuilt for residential purposes and served as the tower's apartment. At the beginning of the 1920s the tower was dilapidated and in danger of collapsing, the city under Mayor Fritz Janson planned to demolish it. Committed citizens prevented the demolition and secured the building with iron anchors using their own resources. The bell house lost its function at the beginning of the 20th century with the inauguration of the church tower of the Georgenkirche on Eisenacher Markt . In the 1970s, two apartments were built into the bell house.
