The bell tower in Hattingen is the church tower of the former Johanniskirche from 1737.

The town wine house stood here before the church was built. Sales contracts and annuity contracts were sealed with wine here. The Reformed Congregation in Hattneggen and in the Blankenstein office rented the hall in 1688 for worship purposes. When the congregation inherited the building, they had it demolished to build St. John's Church.

In an air raid on March 14, 1945, the nave and the surrounding houses of the Krämersdorf , mostly half-timbered houses standing close together, were destroyed by explosive bombs. Only the church tower with the baroque dome could be restored. The banker and entrepreneur Leo Gottwald donated a carillon for him.

For the area, the city planning officer Dr. Ulrich in 1946 designed a new square with a complex of shops and arcades. In 1952 the new development of the Krämersdorf was completed.
