The bell tower in Biehla

The 11.58 meter high Biehlaer bell tower is a monument in the southern Brandenburg town of Elsterwerda in the Elbe-Elster district . It is located in the center of Biehla at the confluence of Breite Straße and Haidaer Straße and, along with the Biehla water tower, is one of the district's landmarks.

history

On July 3, 1860, the Biehlaer Friedhof am Schulberg (vineyard) was inaugurated by the superintendent Klewitz after the first burial. Until then, the deceased of the community were buried in the Elsterwerda cemetery in Berliner Straße, which is currently used as a city park. Since Biehla did not have its own church at that time and the bells were missing, the desire arose to build a bell tower in the village based on the model of some surrounding communities.

First, the necessary bell was acquired. It was made in the Hoyerswerda foundry "Hadank & Sohn" and on July 20, 1862 the bell arrived in Biehla. Here it was housed in the tower built by master builder Dietrich in the same year, which was inaugurated on October 22, 1862. Of the total costs of around 600 thalers, the municipality of Biehla contributed 500 thalers. The old Prussian Evangelical Upper Church Council added the remaining sum from the collection fund.

The bell weighed1/2  quintals and had a circumference of 2.30 meters. It survived the First World War , but was removed at the beginning of the Second World War and melted down for war purposes. There were two inscriptions on it.

On the one hand you read:

I loudly praise God and call all Christians;
I wake up to joy and consolation in the body
and remind me of eternity.

The inscription on the other side read:

Anno Domini 1862
municipality Biehla
Klewitz. Pastor and Ephorus
Kuntsch, teacher
Matthes, local judge

Shortly after the Second World War, on February 13, 1948, a bell cast in Apolda was hung. The inscription on this bell reads:

Heinz Schurig sons in Apolda poured me
Soli deo gloria in 1948

However, shortly after the inauguration of the newly built Evangelical Christ Church on the Biehlaer Winterberg in 1963, the bell was removed again and hung in the tower of the cemetery chapel, where it remained until December 2004. Since then, the bell has been housed again in the Biehla bell tower. In addition to redesigning the surrounding area, the tower and bell have been partially renovated in recent years. A Christmas concert has traditionally been held here on Christmas Eve for several years .
