Gloucester and Dean Forest Railway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gloucester and Dean Forest Railway was a British railway company based in Gloucestershire in England .

The company received on July 27, 1846 the concession to build a 25 km long railway line between Gloucester via Grand Court Junction to Awre . In Awre a connection with the South Wales Railway was to be established.

The company was majority owned by the Great Western Railway . On September 19, 1851, the section between Gloucester and Grand Court Junction was opened. Immediately after opening, the Gloucester and Dean Forest Railway was leased to the Great Western Railway.

Since no further financial resources were available, the South Wales Railway built the section between Grand Court Junction and Awre. The GWR completed the stretch from Over to a quay at Llanthony in Gloucester. The opening of these sections took place on March 20, 1854.

In 1869 the line built in the broad gauge of 2140 mm was converted to standard gauge . On June 30, 1874, the Gloucester and Dean Forest Railway was finally taken over by the Great Western Railway.
