Glyn Warren Philpot
Glyn Warren Philpot (born October 5, 1884 in Clapham , † December 16, 1937 in London ) was an English painter .
Life
Philpot was born in 1884 as the fourth child of John Philpot and Jessie Carpenter Philpot. After his mother died seven years later, his father married her half-sister Julia. At the age of 15, Philpot went to the Lambeth School of Art . From 1904 he exhibited his pictures at the Royal Academy in London . He converted to the Roman Catholic faith in Paris and often worked in Spain. Philpot served in the British infantry during World War I but was dismissed for incapacity in 1917. He portrayed the British Admiralty . In 1921 he painted portraits in the USA. later in Italy and Egypt. In 1927 he became a curator of the Tate Gallery . He was elected President of the Guild of Catholic Artists and painted a number of pictures with religious subjects. He had a solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 1930. In 1931 he went to Berlin, where his pictures with homosexual content caused irritation. He later went to Spain and Morocco. He died of a heart attack in London at the age of 53 and was buried in Petersham.
