Gnaeus Granius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gnaeus Granius and Quintus Granius were two members of the Roman family of Granii and followers of Gaius Marius . After this 88 BC BC was defeated in the fight against Sulla for the assertion of Rome , he was ostracized by Sulla with his most important supporters. So it was for Gnaeus and Quintus Granius.

One of the two Granii treated here - which one cannot be decided due to the lack of specification of the phenomenon - joined Marius on his escape from Rome. According to Plutarch, he was Marius 'stepson, but there is no other information available about a previous marriage of Julia , Marius' wife, to a Granius. When Marius arrived in Ostia , he boarded a ship belonging to his friend Numerius and was accompanied by his stepson Granius and other outlaws. As a result of a violent storm, the fugitives sailing south had to land at the Circei foothills . Later, when they got near Minturnae , they saw horsemen jumping up and at the same time two cargo ships near the coast. Thereupon they tried to swim to the ships to save. Granius and other companions managed to reach one of the two watercraft and then cross over to the island of Aenaria ( Ischia ). Marius, however, was captured first, but escaped and later met Granius and his friends on Aenaria again. They now sailed on to North Africa. The further fate of Granius is unknown, since he no longer appears in the sources.
