The inscription ( CIL 14, 3955 )

Gnaeus Munatius Aurelius Bassus (full name form Gnaeus Munatius Marci filius Palatina Aurelius Bassus ) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 2nd century AD . Individual stations in his career are known through an inscription dated 101/170.

Bassus was initially Praefectus fabrum . Subsequently, he exercised two military commands. He was first prefect of the Cohors III Sagittariorum , which was stationed in the province of Galatia et Cappadocia , and then prefect of the Cohors II Asturum , which was stationed in the province of Britannia .

Bassus was commissioned by the governor of the province of Britannia to carry out a census of the Roman citizens who lived in the Colonia Victricensis ( Camulodunum ). He was then appointed by the emperor as curator of the Via Nomentana ; this post was believed to have been linked to an annual income of 100,000 sesterces .

Bassus was inscribed in the tribe of Palatina . He came from Nomentum , where he was also patron and flamen perpetuus .

Remarks

  1. According to Hans-Georg Pflaum, Procurator Augusti , which is highlighted in the inscription, refers to the post of curator viae Nomentanae ; this is the only known example that a curator responsible for a street was also procurator Augusti in this function . According to Pflaum, the emperor took over the cost of repairing the Via Nomentana and therefore hired one of the notables in Nomentum to be responsible for the proper use of the funds.
