As a go-around (Engl. Go-around ) is called a maneuver in which a started landing not with a landing completed, but by accelerating and transition to the climb is canceled.

Go-around is ordered by air traffic control or carried out independently by the pilot . The most frequent triggers are missed approaches or the failure to recognize the runway or the approach lights at the decision height DA / DH or MDA / MDH.

Another use case for the go-around is the training of approach and landing: Here, after a successful landing approach, the system starts before ( low approach ) or immediately after touchdown ( touch-and-go ). In this way, significantly more approaches and landings can be trained in a shorter time than if you first landed, braked and rolled off the runway and then started again from the start of the runway.

If the touch-and-go is not planned for touch-and-go, but instead takes place after touch-down to avert danger to the aircraft and passengers, this is also referred to as balked landing .

Take off as a flight maneuver

The go-around per se is not counted as an incident (but possibly the reasons for the go-around, for example vehicles on the runway), but as a possible completion of the approach in addition to the successful landing. The go- around counts as a flight maneuver and is usually followed by a traffic pattern in order to get back to the correct starting point for the approach. Modern aircraft have automatic systems that facilitate the pilot's go-around maneuver, e.g. B. the TOGA button. As soon as the thrust reverser has been activated, it is no longer possible to restart.

Use of language

When people talk about getting started in common parlance, it almost always means that someone can move forward quickly in a new job or project without needing time for training. The fact that the image from aviation does not fit in this sense is ignored.
