The Gobi Altai ( Mongolian Говь Алтайн нуруу ) comprises the southeastern part of the Altai in the southwest of Mongolia .
The Gobi-Altai forms a southeastern continuation of the Mongolian Altai . It runs over a length of 500 km in NNW-SSE direction. Its average altitude is between 1500 and 2500 m . The highest point of the Gobi-Altai is the Ich Bogd Uul with a height of 3957 m . The Gobi-Altai is separated from the northern Changai Mountains by a plateau . The Gobi Desert extends east of the mountain range .
The mountain range consists mainly of granite , sandstone and limestone . The Gobi-Altai region is extremely prone to earthquakes .
