Godepert

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Godepert (also Godepert of Bavaria ; † 662 ) was from 661 until the following year one of two equal kings of the Lombards . Other spellings of his name are Gundipert , Godebert , Godipert , Godpert , Gotebert , Gotbert , Gotpert , Gosbert and Gottbert .

Life

Godepert was the eldest son of the Lombard king Aripert I , who, without consulting the Lombard greats, appointed his two sons Godepert and Perctarit as equal successors. After Aripert's death in 661, Godepert resided in Ticinum ( Pavia ) and Perctarit in Mediolanum ( Milan ). There was general dissatisfaction, on the one hand in the nobility, who insisted on their participation in the election of the king, on the other hand between the two brothers, who met with suspicion. Godepert tried to win the support of the Duke of Benevento , Grimoald , to whom he gave his sister as a wife. Grimoald took the opportunity for himself, however. He marched with his troops to northern Italy and murdered Godepert in his palace in Ticinum (Pavia); Perctarit fled to the Avars . Grimoald had the Lombard nobility confirm his royal dignity.

Godepert is considered the father of Raginpert I , Duke of Turin and later King of the Lombards.
