Godescalc Evangelist
The Godescalc Evangelistary is a Carolingian illuminated manuscript in Latin that was created between 781 and 783 in the so-called court school of Charlemagne at the Aachen royal palace . It is the oldest manuscript of this painting school, also known as the Ada group according to its main manuscript .
The book is named after a scribe Godescalc. According to Kolophon, the clients were Charlemagne and his wife Hildegard . Today the manuscript is in the Paris Bibliothèque nationale under the signature Ms. nouv. acq. lat. 1203 .
The Evangelistary is illuminated with six full-page miniatures , ornamental decorations, initials and decorative pages. It was written in gold and silver inks on purple-stained parchment . Stylistically it still clearly shows elements of the insular illumination , the full-page miniatures - the enthroned Christ , the four evangelists and the fountain of life - already strive for real corporeality and a logical connection to the depicted space and thus shaped the style of the following works by Karl's court school of the great. In the Godescalc Evangelistary, the motif of the fountain of life appears for the first time in a preserved evangelist .
