history

The Goethe Society Hanover was largely founded by Walther Lampe in the Weimar Republic on September 26, 1925. Lampe was second chairman until 1947, then chairman until 1964 and honorary chairman from 1969.

In the 1950s, the Goethe Society Hanover was the largest local association of the Goethe Society with up to 1,200 members. The long-standing and close relationship with the bookstore Sachse & Heinzelmann, whose co-owner Margarete Jockusch was a managing director of the company from 1949 to 1989, and honorary chairwoman from 1989 onwards, was beneficial.

In 1995 the Goethe-Gesellschaft Hannover had around 400, currently around 200 members.

Cultural highlights of the association were

  • 1928 and 2003 commemorations for Charlotte Kestner
  • 1932, 1949 and 1982 the Goethe commemorations , as well
  • the organization of the "on-site conference" in 1993 of the 37 local associations of the Goethe Society at the time.
