Gojra (Urdu: گوجرہ) is a city in Toba Tek Singh district in Punjab Province in Pakistan . It is located near Faisalabad .

history

The city of Gojra was founded in 1896 when the colonization of Faisalabad began. The area could be made fertile through a channel of the Chanab . The railway line between Faisalabad and Gojra was laid in 1899. The city received the status of a designated area committee in 1904 and was expanded to a B-class municipality in 1925. In 1906, according to The Imperial Gazetteer of India, the population was 2589.

In August 1947 India and Pakistan gained independence. Unrest and local fighting followed the swift withdrawal of the British, resulting in an estimated one million civilian deaths, particularly in the western region of Punjab. Gojra, located in the region of Punjab Province that became West Pakistan, was populated by Hindus and Sikhs who immigrated to India, while Muslim refugees from India settled in the region.

The city was the site of the 2009 Gojra Riots, in which a series of attacks against Christians resulted in the deaths of eight people, including four women and one child. International attention also attracted a blasphemy trial against a Christian couple from Gojra who were imprisoned for six years from 2014 onwards.
