history

Katharina and Paul R. Kraemer

Paul R. Kraemer was born as the youngest son of four children to a craftsman. After leaving school, he did an apprenticeship as a goldsmith. At the age of 22 he was the youngest goldsmith in Germany to receive his master's certificate. In 1941 he opened his "workshop for goldsmithing" in Cologne. In 1943 he married Katharina Hogut. She continued the workshop during the war years. In 1948 the couple employed 14 goldsmiths, and in 1951 the first “Gold Kraemer” jewelery shop opened in Schildergasse in Cologne. Paul R. Kraemer's concept of making jewelry affordable for everyone earned Paul R. Kraemer the nickname “Goldsmith for Millions”. However, economic success was marred by a severe blow of fate. Son Rolf was born in 1953 with severe disabilities. Despite intensive care, he died in 1966. The parents took his death as an opportunity for their diverse social commitment. In 1972 they established the Gold Kraemer Foundation to specifically support people with mental and physical disabilities, the sick, the poor and the elderly. The foundation launched and implemented numerous initiatives and projects in Frechen, where the couple had settled, and in the Rhein-Erft district. In addition to now four homes, including one in Cologne, for people with disabilities, this also includes, for example, a special educational kindergarten, a school for children and young people with special needs in the field of intellectual development and other outpatient projects. After 63 years of marriage, Katharina Kraemer died on April 4, 2006, and Paul R. Kraemer died a year later, on May 10, 2007.
