Golden flag
The golden flag was a commercial building in Leipzig . After its destruction in World War II , only its hexagonal stair tower was reconstructed. It is a listed building .
history
In 1570 the Leipzig merchant, councilor and mayor Hieronymus Lotter built a trading yard in Burgstrasse for one of his sons, which contained a hexagonal stair tower in one corner. In 1667 the court was bought by the merchant Friedrich Conrad. In 1780 Christian Weg bought the house from a foreclosure auction, partially rebuilt it and probably put a gold-plated flag on or on the house. Probably for this reason it was first called "To the golden flag" in the address book of 1784, after it had previously been referred to as "To the black eagle", "the color" and "the old color".
After the Leipzig History Association was founded in 1867 and it had also started to collect historically significant objects, these were exhibited in the Goldene Fahne house from 1870 before the collection moved to the Alte Johannishospital in 1873 .
During the bombing raid on Leipzig on December 4, 1943 , the golden flag was largely destroyed, the body of the stair tower was preserved. When an angled block of flats was built on the site of the Golden Flag from 1960 to 1963, the restored historic stair tower with its sloping windows and its pointed roof dome was incorporated into its southwest corner as an ideal combination of old and new. However, apart from an entrance to the attic of the house, it is not functionally connected to it. The architect of the building was Frieder Gebhardt. The tower and house were renovated in the mid-1990s.
There are only three stair towers from the Renaissance in Leipzig, one in Weber's court , one in the royal house and that of the Golden Flag.
