House sign: Golden Hand

The Golden Hand House in Leipzig is a residential and commercial building at Nikolaistraße 16. The name refers to the representation of the house sign above the entrance, a golden hand. The house, built in the style of late classicism , is a listed building .

history

For the first time in 1561 and for the last time in 1586 an inn is mentioned on the property under the name of Roter Adler . 1713 appeared in the book Das Anno 1713 flourishing Leipzig, the name "zuolden Hand", but its origin is not named. If you look at the upper part as a cloud, the sign can be interpreted as the hand of God , which is supposed to offer protection to the house.

In 1854/55, Johann Christian Freygang had the building, which is still the oldest house on the street, built according to plans by the Leipzig architect Paul Bachmann for his commission and forwarding business . After 1990 the house was extensively renovated. It contains catering, retail and service businesses.

Courtyard side

The Goldene Hand building is a three-wing complex with a very narrow courtyard area that extends at an angle to behind the neighboring property no. The front building with a facade width of around 15 meters to the street has four floors. Via three segmented arched openings on the ground floor, of which the middle one forms the passage to the courtyard and bears the house logo, there are six window axes arranged in pairs on each of the upper floors .

The pairs of windows are separated by pilasters , of which the two middle ones are closed off by antique vases. The cornices of the upper floors are cranked with the pilasters . Pilasters and cornices show simple decorative elements. The segmental arches on the ground floor are repeated in the windows of the first floor. Some window canopies have acroteria . The central axis is emphasized by palmettes over each middle pair of windows. Below the cantilevered main cornice run a tooth cut and below it an acanthus frieze interrupted by round openings .

The narrow back of the front building between the side wings has a half-timbered facade lined with bricks. After a short four-story section, the side wings drop down to two floors. Their loading hatches are evidence of their former economic function.
