History and design

The remains in 2019

The name of the Godhannwarte, which no longer exists, goes back to its initiator Franz Goldhann (1859–1954), a writer and secretary of the Austrian Tourist Club . The area around the Frauenkogel, near which the Gösting castle ruins are located, was undeveloped around 1890 and had no marked hiking trails. Goldhann had the idea to mark the paths to the Frauenkogel and to have a lookout tower built. After the tourist club had decided on the implementation, he took over the project management.

The wooden tower had a total height of 25 meters, the design came from the architect Josef Hönigmann from Graz. The almost square viewing platform rested on four wooden beams and was accessible via several flights of stairs. A flat tent roof crowned the Goldhannwarte. The Goldhannwarte was officially opened on July 24, 1892; the view from it was surprisingly wide and good. The wooden tower remained in place until 1908 when lightning struck and the building burned down. The attempt to rebuild the control room in 1915 failed because of the First World War . Despite the laying of the foundation walls, no new building has been made to date.
