The Reinerkogelwarte , formerly: Rainerwarte , was a viewing tower on the Reinerkogel (formerly: Rainerkogel) in the Andritz district not far from the border with the Geidorf district .

History and design

Franz Clar (1812–1876), a doctor who looked at city beautification from the perspective of health care and who had run a dietetic sanatorium from 1861 to 1866 , had a wooden gloriette built on the Graz Rainerkogel in the early 1870s . which was accessible via a system of paths. The waiting on May 1, inaugurated in 1873 and the Styrian Mountain Club accepted.

The lookout tower was in poor condition as early as 1880, but it was restored. After 1890, the neglected control room collapsed and its wooden remains were set on fire out of mischief. As a result, the landowners concerned prohibited public use of the access to the top of the Kogel.

In 1901 the local resident Oskar Speth Freiherr von Schülzburg (* 1860, †  na ) decided to rebuild the control room. On December 2, 1901, the official inspection of the building site took place, which proceeded without objections to the project. In view of the easy accessibility of the control room to be built, Speth-Schülzburg had a road ( path to Rainerkogel ) built in the summer of that year (which had remained unlit for years ).

The starting May 14, 1902 by 20 Heller to besteigende Reiner Kogel waiting was an in half-timbered style constructed tower on a square plan. Executed by master builder Josef Laber (basement) and master carpenter Josef Fekonja (woodwork), the building had three upper floors and windows on the east and west sides. A roofed wooden walkway crowning the building served as a viewing platform. A tower keeper's house was part of the generally accessible control room. In addition, an inn ( tower tavern ) with a restaurant was developed. When the new control room opened in 1902, there was a tram connection between the city center and Andritz (today: lines 4 and 5), from whose stop Bäckergasse (today: Robert-Stolz-Gasse ) day trippers made their way to the summit of the Kogel.

Closely connected with the access to the control room is the Jakobsladder , an open staircase on the southwest side of the Reinerkogel that was built in the spring of 1903 and has 150 steps and is accompanied by niches and benches.

In 1914, Speth-Schülzburg sold the property around the control room and the Jakobsleiter property for 24,000 crowns to the city of Graz for the purpose of maintaining it as a public park.

In 1957 the Reinerkogelwarte was dismantled. Their former location is now overgrown. The Jacob's ladder is still a destination today.
